Department Obstetrical Services
The Obstetrical Department concentrates on delivering safe, quality, cost-effective, specialized care for the pregnant woman and her newborn. The department serves a patient population of females in the age group of 15 to 45 with an occasional population in the 12-14 year old age group, as well as the newborn male/female population. Adult females (18 years of age to 64 years) and elderly females (65 years of age and older) requiring surgical intervention for gynecologic issues may also be cared for on the Obstetrical unit. In order to optimize the safety and security of a high risk area the OB department has restricted access and a Halo Infant Security system in place for the protection of the newborn.

The Obstetrical care provided focuses on helping individuals and families to achieve their optimal health potential through the use of the nursing process. Emphasis is placed on providing cost-effective quality care and education to promote family unity while maintaining physical safety. Parents are taught newborn care and parenting skills during their stay so that they may gain confidence in their abilities to care for their newborns at home.
The goal of the Obstetrical Department is to meet each person and family at their own level of intellectual and social being, and then provide individualized care in an environment that will best meet their needs.
Prepared childbirth classes are offered to the mother and father or significant other, both in English and Spanish, to prepare them to make educated, informed decisions regarding their care and the care of their newborn.
The OB Department Director oversees the Women’s Infant’s Children’s program which safeguards the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutrition risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care.
The qualified Obstetrical RN, LPN, and Nurse Tech II are responsible and accountable for their ongoing improvement of nursing skills and competencies necessary to provide a safe and therapeutic environment for the individual, the family and community. Nurse Tech I, Nursing Assistants and Unit Secretaries may be utilized to enable the nurse to focus on patient care.
Obstetrical care is provided 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a -week.
